এবারের চলমান টি-টোয়েন্টি বিশ্বকাপে যে কয়েকটি দল হতাশ করেছে তার মধ্যে একটি হলো নিউজিল্যান্ড। কেইন উইলিয়ামসন-ট্রেন্ট বোল্টরা ফেভারিট হয়ে আসর শুরু করেও জিততে পারেনি একটি ম্যাচ। তাই আসরের পরবর্তী রাউন্ডে তাদের যাওয়া ঝুলে ছিল অন্য দলগুলোর ওপর। তবে অন্য দলগুলো টিকতে পারল না আফগান বুলডোজারের সামনে ফলে এবারের আসর থেকে বিদায় নিশ্চিত হলো কিউইদের।
শুক্রবার (১৪ জুন) ত্রিনিদাদে বিশ্বকাপের গ্রুপ পর্বের ম্যাচে মুখোমুখি হয়েছিল পাপুয়া নিউগিনি ও আফগানিস্তান। প্রথম দুই ম্যাচে জয় তুলে নেওয়া আফগানদের সামনে সমীকরণ ছিল সহজ। পাপুয়া নিউগিনিকে হারাও আর সুপার এইটে যাও। এই সমীকরণ খুব সহজেই সমাধান করেছেন নবী-রশীদরা। প্রথমে ব্যাট করা পাপুয়া নিউগিনির ৯৬ রানের টার্গেট আফগানরা পেরিয়ে যায় ৭ উইকেট ও ২৯ বল বাকি থাকতেই। ফলে পঞ্চম দল হিসেবে সুপার এইট নিশ্চিত করল আফগানিস্তান। তাদের এই জয়ে বিদায় হলো নিউজিল্যান্ডের।
